At Usher High School, no learner walks alone. Student Connect brings together the guidance, peer support, leadership pathways, clubs, faith programmes, and wellbeing services that help young people thrive at Usher High School, academically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Whether you are a new Form 1 boarder finding your feet, a senior preparing for ZIMSEC examinations, or a prefect leading your peers, this is your hub for the people and programmes that support you throughout your Usher journey.
Guidance and counselling
Qualified guidance counsellors and senior staff provide confidential support for academic planning, personal challenges, and transitions through each form.
One-to-one sessions
Learners may request private appointments to discuss stress, friendships, family concerns, or any issue affecting their wellbeing.
Subject and career guidance
Counsellors help learners choose O-Level and A-Level combinations, explore career paths, and plan for life after Usher.
Examination preparation
Study skills workshops, revision timetables, and coping strategies for examination anxiety are offered ahead of ZIMSEC sittings.
Learners supporting learners
Peer support at Usher recognises that young people often confide in one another first. Senior learners, hostel leaders, and trained peer mentors create a culture where asking for help is encouraged, not stigmatised. Prefects and dormitory captains are trained to listen, refer serious concerns to staff, and model respectful conduct across the campus.
Peer support
Boarding life brings learners from across Matabeleland South and beyond into close community. Peer support networks help new boarders settle in, pair Form 1 learners with senior buddies, and ensure no dormitory feels isolated during difficult weeks.
Group discussions on topics such as bullying, social media use, and healthy relationships are facilitated by staff with input from student representatives.
Leadership opportunities
Usher develops leaders who serve, in chapel, dormitories, classrooms, and on the sports field. Learners grow through responsibility, mentorship, and example.
Prefect body
Head girl, head boy, and senior prefects uphold school standards and represent learners to administration.
Hostel leadership
Dormitory captains assist matrons and housemasters with routines, discipline, and welfare in girls' and boys' boarding.
Sports captains
Team captains lead training, encourage fair play, and rally school spirit during SASA and inter-house fixtures.
Club chairpersons
Learners chair debate, timbrels, environmental, and other societies, organising events and mentoring younger members.
Clubs and societies
Co-curricular clubs give learners space to explore talents, build friendships, and contribute to campus life. From timbrels and choir to debate, environmental action, and sports teams, there is a place for every interest at Usher.
Clubs meet after lessons and on designated afternoons. Learners are encouraged to join at least one society each term and to balance activities with academic commitments and boarding routines.

Faith and fellowship
As a Salvation Army school, Usher nurtures spiritual growth through daily devotions, Sunday worship, corps partnership, and fellowship groups. Salvation Army officers on campus provide pastoral guidance alongside classroom teachers and hostel staff.
Learners are invited, never pressured, to explore faith through Bible study, prayer meetings, and practical acts of service. Chapel gatherings remain a cornerstone of Usher life, where the whole school comes together in worship and reflection.

Sick bay & first aid
On-campus sick bay staff handle minor illnesses and injuries. Parents are contacted promptly when further medical attention is needed.
Nutrition & meals
Balanced meals in the dining hall support growing learners. Dietary needs are accommodated where possible with parental notification.
Safe campus
Fenced grounds, supervised dormitories, and registered visitors ensure learners are protected throughout the school day and boarding hours.
Anti-bullying policy
Bullying is not tolerated. Learners and parents can report concerns to teachers, counsellors, or hostel staff for prompt action.
Structured routines
Predictable daily schedules in boarding help learners manage sleep, study, and recreation for long-term wellbeing.
Parent communication
The school office and hostel staff keep parents informed about welfare, conduct, and academic progress throughout the term.
Academic support
Usher's academic support network ensures learners receive help when subjects become challenging. Teachers offer extra lessons, boarding prep is supervised each evening, and the Japan Usher Library provides quiet space for revision and research.
Department heads monitor learner progress across Forms 1–6. Learners falling behind are identified early and supported through remedial sessions, study groups, and parental engagement.

Each form elects representatives who communicate feedback from classmates to teachers and counsellors, ensuring every voice is heard, not only the loudest.

Learners may submit ideas for clubs, events, or campus improvements through designated channels. Staff review submissions and respond where changes are feasible.
